chic geek : jcrew fall 2011

Hot off the press- J.Crew just released pictures from there brand spankin' new Fall 2011 collection and I am literally squealing in excitement! There has always, always been a nerdy part of me that is most comfortable in a button down and loafers, never fails. (Mind you, that button down and pair of loafers are styled as chic as possible, not just thrown on). But to my delight, J.Crew has eliminated the hard work for me and made dressing glamorously preppy an absolute no-brianer. Tailored trousers, cropped jackets, blazers, and layers- galore! And another high note to add to the bunch? Those bright pops of color we are currently seeing this spring are going nowhere- making achieving a more preppy-refined look this fall that much more...well, colorful! Look, look, look...

made in the shade

Daydreaming of summer has pretty much become my full-time job. Some of my best summer memories are the days I've spent by the water basking in the sun with some stellar ladies. Benefits include, but are not limited to: much-needed girl time and catching up, relaxation (breathe in, breathe out and repeat), and of course perfectly bronzed skin that takes your skin from pasty and dull to glowing in a snap. Careful, though, while a slightly-bronzed glow may be in, skin that is tomato-red burnt and peeling like nobody's business is simply unattractive. (Side note: too-bronzed skin turning you into the next cast member of The Jersey Shore- not okay either. In fact, possibly worse). So how should you maintain just the right amount of glow and bronze without achieving a dermatological faux pas? Learn (how and when) to embrace the shade, ladies. No need to run and hide indoors, simply grab a chic hat and a pair of sunnies and you're golden. I know, I'm not a hat person either, and if you're having commitment issues like me there are plenty of options not just in style but also in price that allow to dip a toe in the water and test out what will look good on those stylin' locks of yours. Sunnies, on the other hand, well...you can never have too many pairs of those! Here are some options to rock the boat and get you going...
{Lulu's 'Riverbanks' Beige Fedora- $37}
{Gargyle 'Super Lucia Summer Safari Puma'- $165}
{Lulu's San Diego Hat Co. 'Merry Gardener' Straw Hat- $41}
{Forever 21 Sunglasses in 'Seafoam/Dark Grey'- $5.80}

bhati beads + j.crew

Drum roll please...this is one collaboration that is just to DIE for. I first spoke of Bhati Beads over here and low and behold these babies have popped up on the grid yet again (and their popularity is lookin' a thousand times hotter)! On March 10, 2011, it was announced on the Bhati Beads Facebook page that they have recently been added to the inventory over at J.Crew and I simply could not be more ecstatic. This is a major milestone in business for Margaret Maggard, the brains behind all things Bhati Beads. A simple idea stemming from her son's school project regarding the solar system and countless efforts including her selling her bracelets door-to-door in the beginning to get her feet off the ground, this is one company that was built with a little luck and a lot of love and hard work. Not to mention, these bracelets are absolutely fabulous. Pop o' color, sparkle & style- all wrapped around that dainty little wrist of yours.

color combos that kill

 {Navy + Burnt Sienna}
{Blush + Goldenrod}

Once upon a time, I used to play it (generally) pretty safe when it came to fashion and pairing items of clothing together. Slowly but surely I came out of that safe-styling shell and learned to play around with not only different patterns and textures, but different color combos as well. The above two pairings of color have me legitimately obsessing. And personally, I feel as though they are pretty season neutral as well; perfect for warm or cool weather, these color combos are just perfect to test out and will definitely last!

lazy weekend

TGIF ladies and gentleman. (I'm a little late, I know. Roughly four more hours March 25, 2011 left to go!)
I am ready for one lazy, sun-soaked weekend that looks a little like the image below...though it looks as though I may be warding off rain instead...
Wherever you are- enjoy it!

keep it loose

A trend that slowly emerged last year spring/summer and one that is rapidly gaining popularity currently this Spring/Summer 2011 season, the loose and drapey style of a short is a double-header in fashion every women dreams of: comfortable and flattering. Ingeniously loosely skimming the hips and upper thigh (a part of the body many women would appreciate not to be accentuated), this short shows off the skinniest part of the legs- and who's complaining about that? It was definitely a trend that took myself a second to warm up to, but I have to admit the comfort and versatility of shorts like these simply can't be beat! Belted or smocked, printed or solid, high-waisted or sitting just below the waist, there are plenty of options to keep you happy (I've even spotted a denim pair or two...may have to think about that one...but there's some more motivation to go ahead and throw those daisy dukes out the window sister)! Bonus: all of the above looks (From the top- Tibi, James Jeans, and Alice + Olivia) are available on Piperlime which means free shipping and free returns, a literal "You really, really have nothing to lose" policy!

kloss up close

Recognize any of the above? Let's get real, you've probably seen most, if not all, of these photos of supermodel Karlie Kloss featured in ads on about every other page of your favorite fashion mag. Fun fact: Karlie is a true midwesterner from none other than the great state of Missouri! Which is why I had the pleasure of hearing her speak this afternoon in my hometown. It was a small venue of only about 50-60 people and after a brief intro into her life as currently one of the most sought after models in the industry, Kloss participated in a Q&A session. The questions were fabulous and flying at her from every direction, though she managed to keep calm throughout the hour and answered the questions as, well...as any 18 year old would! You hear horror stories of people involved in the fashion industry, from the models to the designers, and I must admit it was rather refreshing to hear from someone so grounded and humble. Kloss was just precious as she occasionally stumbled over her words, admitting that she was nervous, but it fazed absolutely no one. Kloss is simply a class act and provided quite a down-to-earth, fashionably informative afternoon, no question about it.

ooh baby!

Any mothers or mommies-to-be out there that are begging for proof that you (really and truly) can be both expecting and incredibly fashionable- deep breath, now rejoice! Granted, I am lightyears away from having a little munchkin anytime soon, however I cannot tell you how excited I was to learn a while back that style goddesses Rachel Zoe and Victoria Beckham are simultaneously expecting a mini-fashionista or two of their own! (Let's hope and pray for a sweet girl for Posh; the Beckham boys are precious, but I think it's about time a little girl was introduced to the style clan). Both ladies look dazzling and somehow manage to avoid maternity clothes all together while continuing to maintain their number one spots on 'Style Icon' lists everywhere!

strap yourself in

Today consisted of manis and pedis with my sweet mother, a much needed occurance. When we left the salon, all I could think about was how freeing it was to finally be able to slip my polished toes into some strappy sandals and be on my way without freezing my feet off! Sandals this season are being offered in every color under the sun with any embellishment you can think of- multiple straps are especially in, as shown by the above pair of Charles David "Grayce" sandals.

head, shoulders, knees & toes

(Not so much the knees...) But everywhere else we've got you covered! Spring Break is here sista, and I am simply ecstatic about jet-setting to the heartland for some gorgeous midwestern scenery and quality time with family and friends. By the way, if it's officially 'Spring Break' that must mean that it's finally officially 'spring', right? I'm going to pretend that answer was a resounding "yes!"
With that in mind, here are a few items that I like to invest in each spring to rotate in and liven up my wardrobe...also a fabulous idea if you can only invest in so many pieces this spring- simply find a piece that incorporates a current trend in combination with the sparkle of spring and you're good to go!
Are you drooling yet? Well, speaking of drooling, are you guilty of being a 'Spring Break crash-dieter' or have you been known to be in the past? If there is one word I have simply heard enough of this week, it's "carbs" and/or "calories". Ladies, enough already! BUT, I will say that I ran across this baby earlier today and thought it quite handy for a Starbucks outing we would rather not end in '600 calories' thank you very much (or for the 'Spring Break crash-dieter' who can give up anything...except her Starbucks).

dazzling de la renta

Let's play a little game called, "If You Really Knew Me...". I'll go first. If you really knew me, you'd know that there are two men in my life who have always proven themselves to be reliable and have never ever let me down (family doesn't count). That would be 1. Frank Sinatra and 2. Oscar de la Renta. I'm sure my love for Frank will show up in a blog post one of these days, but for now my main focus is Oscar. Ladies, let me introduce you to a fabulous new blog discovery I have made called OscarPRGirl aka everything you've ever wanted to know about de la Renta behind the scenes. (...Also everything you've ever wanted to be in life but haven't reached that opportunity yet...) Regardless, it's a fabulous inside look into Oscar's design world, giving each reader the feeling of VIP treatment with each fabulous photo. Here's a peek:

i've got sunshine

One word that describes today: YUCK. (Cloudy, rainy and gloomy would also suffice.) There is absolutely nothing that I enjoy more on a lazy day indoors escaping the disastrous outdoors than a few pretty pictures to brighten my Saturday! Easy on the eyes and full of pops of color to ring in the 'May flowers' part of Spring, rather than 'April (March) showers'! If you're lucky enough to be experiencing beautiful weather today, enjoy it!

one for one

What do Shenae Grimes, Chris Pine, Keira Knightley and Liv Tyler all have in common? All four are proud supporters and sporters of TOMS shoes. At this point, I'm sure most of you are quite familiar with the TOMS organization but here's a quick recap- With every pair of TOMS you purchase, a new pair of shoes will be given to a child in need. One for one. Using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit a greater good. TOMS transforms customers into benefactors, endlessly raising support.
What could be better, right? You're shelling out a couple smackers for comfort and style while benefitting children in need at the very same time! And to add to that excitement, TOMS has just recently released their Spring 2011 styles (which I have been anxiously awaiting...). I may have held my expectations slightly above reality, but I was able to pick out two pairs that I would happily be the owner of- Petal Grosgrain (probably because they blatantly remind me of the pointe shoes I used to live in) and Ivory Glitters (a more subtle option on a day when I don't feel as flashy as the Gold Glitters I already own)!
