oscars 2011: simply architectural

The red carpet at the 2011 Oscars was flooded with plenty of jewel encrusted gowns and pops of color (especially red) or shades of nude. Always a greatly anticipated afternoon of fashion, the stars were out with a rather consistently stable sense of style given their body type, the occasion, etc. There were two dresses in particular that absolutely stuck out to me in an incredibly chic way- they were simply architecturally sound. While they were not list topper's for anyone the day after, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett were subtly stunning, in my opinion, in a sense that was in no way cliche or too understated. In a metallic gold Calvin Klein Collection gown, Gwen was the perfect celeb to pair with it's sleek and simple-lined structure. Cate's Givency Couture gown I thought was beautifully architectured; admittedly, I know it will by no means be everyone's cup of tea, but there's something to be said for well-thought out construction and intricate detail of the gold and lavender beading and bodice.

a familiar face

Olivia Palermo's shining face has graced the precence of Stylecaster's "50 Most Stylist New Yorkers" list. Are we surprised? Not at all. But more than happy to read about it and, yet again, lust over her ensemble of choice- Ports 1961 top, Topshop skirt, Elizabeth & James shoes.

new 'do

Short. Choppy. Bobbed. Bleached. Everyone's doing it. New hair is becoming the next Spring 2011 statement piece. Refer here for what I am talking about, and most recently, three certain celebs have taken it to the next level...
...Jen's decided to go with the short bob and honestly, I actually dig it! (Much to my own surprise...) The girl can pull off pretty much any hairstyle at this point, and she does it with class. Kate Beckinsale was spotted, rid of her brunette locks, with a bleach blonde 'do instead. Lastly, at this point I'm sure you've heard about the Bieb's new cut- though the controversy over the (now) nonexistence over his signature 'do will forever reign, I think JB made a smart move and did himself justice by upgrading to this more sophisticated (and a touch more edgy) style.

backwards in high heels

Some days, all I want to go is curl up in a chair with a good book and not have to move for 12 hours. Real life- if and when I do ever get that chance, I'm sure it is very much off in the distant future. However, the next few months are looking to involve many a layover in multiple airports accompanied by a decent amount of frequent flyer miles worth of airtime. That said, Backwards in High Heels: The Impossible Art of Being Female is definitely at the top of my current reading list!

like a lady

Remember the crop top, midriff-bearing, mini mini mini skirt phase of trends a few years back? (Sponsored in full by Abercrombie & Fitch, I am convinced.) Well ladies we may finally, and I mean FINALLY, be able to rid ourselves of the horrible memories we have of trying to dodge such particular items of clothing...and in some cases dodging those wearing them as well. I know that "trend this" and "trend that" seems like all you are hearing about lately but let's be honest, trends are what drive fashion! And anyway, I'm the bearer of good news for this one if you don't mind the subtle reappearance of the 60s...
...Full bodied skirts reaching mid-calf (or at least the knee) and simply more femininely tailored blouses, jackets, and dresses overall. The runways of Louis Vuitton, Jayson Brunsdon, and Dries can Noten all agree that a dash of 'Pleasantville' style in the lives of women everywhere wouldn't hurt. Could I be more thrilled? Or could I be more thrilled.

child's play

Take a peak at these snazzy shoes from J.Crew's Crewcuts line for little ones. Always making sure that little tots everywhere are just as fashionable as the one buying them clothes, Crewcuts starts 'em young and raises 'em right- in terms of style, that is. Some great news? I read about this a while back, and J.Crew goes up to what is comparable to a women's size 6 or 6.5 (7 if you don't mind snug) in shoes and up to what's comparable to a women's size 2 in clothing. So, if you're lucky enough to be "fun-sized" and can squeeze into the numbers mentioned, you may find some luck with this unconventional way of adding to your wardrobe. If not, keep that little one as stylish as you are!

to the max(i) with paper crown

If you haven't heard, Lauren Conrad is currently launching round two of her efforts to create a contemporary, higher end clothing line. Dubbed "Paper Crown", the Fall 2011 look book of this Conrad creation has just been released and we can only hope sales and popularity fare better than her first attempt at a contemporary line (which failed miserably). At first glance, it already looks like an improvement from the previous and there is a notable difference in quality and price compared to her "LC by Lauren Conrad" line featured at Kohl's. Admittedly though, at least for me, there is one downfall to her line; while filled with plenty of on trend pieces for Fall 2011 including leather shorts, blazers, and all sorts of dresses, the line looks almost too much like the designer herself. Sure, her celebrity and idolized stance among young and teenage girls everywhere will ensure decent sales (at least in the beginning), but I truly believe in the statement, "A good designer is someone who can take themselves out of the picture and still be able to design a product and a line that consumers will want to buy." (I know right? Brilliant. Don't ask me exactly who said it, but it was on an episode of "The City" when Whitney Port is presenting her line to a few fashion gurus at Elle magazine.) But who am I to bash LC? While I may not be her number one supporter of Paper Crown (yet...), I was entranced by every single maxi dress her new line had to offer, take a peek...

don't just shop, q

Mother-daughter bonding is just something my sweet Mom and I never really got around to. Don't get me wrong, she is one amazing women and I love her to death but we will never be besties for life, if you know what I mean. There was always one thing, though, that we seemed to really share a love of (promise not to laugh)...late night TV's finest, aka home shopping networks. QVC is our fav. I know, not everyone's cup of tea but it is like an addiction for us.
Enough of that, I'll cut to the chase (and probably the part you're more interested in). For the past few years, QVC has made a driven decision to move away from out of style, "old lady" clothes into the much more fashion forward era. And they're not messin' around. See for yourself on their website, but here are three of my favorite brands from them, all from HUGE and very trusted names in high fashion...

You want to check it out now, don't ya? Well, as if that wasn't convincing, here's a bit more evidence, just in case you thought I was exaggerating, of their celeb following and support (ie. Katrina Bowden and Kim & Kourtney Kardashian) at a recent PR event.

happy valentine's day from fashion's fav couple

You didn't really think I'd let this famed day of love pass with no blog post, did you? In order to combine the fashionable nature of the [Midwestern] Chic blog with the affectionate nature of Valentine's Day, I decided to seek out one of fashion's favorite couples (as well as one of my own)! Diane Kruger, known for being top-notch when it comes to sporting high fashion ensembles, and Joshua Jackson, whom I will always remember as Pacey from Dawson's Creek, are always well-dressed and simply adorable to observe- see for yourself!
Whether you're snugglin' up with your sweet beau or kickin' back with some sweet girl friends, have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

olivia palermo+tibi

OP does it again; there's a reason some of the biggest names in fashion continue to hire this fashionista to be photographed for their campaigns. This time, though, Tibi does it with a twist. Says Tibi, Olivia Palermo is "one of our favorite street-style girls" so you can imagine how thrilled they were when she agreed to participate in their Spring 2011 web campaign. But instead of having OP simply stand around wearing their clothing and looking pretty, they asked her to choose, on her own, the Tibi clothing she would like to be photographed in as well as style her ensembles however she would choose. Of course, such a task is child's play for Olivia whose styling is flawless (in my opinion). Above are my favorite choices from the campaign!

better shape up

We all love statement pieces; they're bold, beautiful, and packed with advantages! For instance, a statement necklace can grab attention and draw the eye away from areas of our figure we may feel are too attention grabbing for our liking. If you're tired of playing it safe with your jewelry and like what you're hearing then listen up because there's an emerging trend in town and it is not messin' around...

Forget about dainty and perfectly proportioned because now more than ever, it's about beauty found in the abnormal. Geometric- that is, triangles, rectangles, ovals, you name it- has arrived and seems to have full intentions of sticking around. As seen in the Spring/Summer 2011 presentations of Malandrino and Oscar de la Renta, necklaces of (literally) all shapes imaginable were welcomed on the runway.

These necklaces are bold, that is for sure. But they also present confidence and beauty when worn. The best part is that there is plenty of variety out there from price to color to size (and obviously shape), so you're bound to find a few that you'll quickly fall in love with. Another advantage? Though I know I mention this often, it is such a valid point I simply must reiterate it- if your wallet is still feeling a little light this season, simply pick up one or two statement pieces like these necklaces (save money) and you're set!

share the love

Rarely do I post about contests held on other blogs, but this one was simply too lovely to pass up! Bekah Davis from Texture.d, a fashion and personal style blogger from Dallas, just posted yesterday the "Loving You Is Pretty" contest.
Says Bekah, "Confidence & belief in the individual that you truly are goes hand-in-hand with your style and the way you look...A person is most beautiful when they love themselves...who they truly are and who they desire to become; weaknesses, struggles, and flaws included."
Each entrant is asked to comment on the Texture.d contest post revealing one thing they truly love about themselves (and only themselves, no other people or places, etc. can be included). Entries are due on February 12, 2011 and a winner will be chosen on the following Valentine's Day! What do you win? That's simply the icing on the cake with this contest- a $100 gift card to the department store of your choice as well as a one year subscription to Self magazine!
To put it simply, this is such a refreshing contest that will leaving you feeling better than ever about yourself- check it out!

lbd alternative round two

Remember when I posted this about a fresh alternative to the sometimes too relied upon little black dress? Well dear friends, a fresh rendition of that post is here and better than ever! Not only are these three dress options crisp, fresh, and ready to ring in some sunshine, they're also way accessible (not to mention budget-friendly)! Courtesy of H&M, these three spring pieces will be available in stores nationwide. And speaking of H&M, if you haven't heard the news let us be the first to tell you- H&M will finally be launching online shopping at the turn of the year 2011-2012! (Whew, took 'em long enough!) If you are as thrilled as we are, Refinery 29 has a fabulous blurb with more about the new addition here.

celebs at their best: volume II

Neutrals anyone? Not only have these four celebs been looking extra fabulous lately, they've all been channeling a very similar trend! Though the onset of spring usually prompts us to dig through our closets and find the brightest, most color-popping item of clothing we own, currently it seems as though fashionistas everywhere are welcoming the warmer weather in a much more subdued manner. Above, Annalynne McCord has her Marc Jacobs Rio Quilted Tote in tow on the set of 90210 while Jennifer Lopez is sporting a Haute Hippie Mini Sequin Wrap Skirt and Christian Louboutin Boulima d-Orsay Sandals as she was announced as Gillette Venus' Global Ambassador in NYC. Simply can't bring yourself to leave out that pop of color this spring? Rachel Bilson and Lo Bosworth are happy to provide you with the perfect solution- incorporate your favorite spring accessory in the color of your choice! Below, RBilson is rockin' her Vanessa Bruno jacket in a lovely orange-red shade while LoBo is ready to hit the shops with her Balenciaga City bag in a fabulous shade of purple.
