two thousand and eleven

The beginning of a new year is a wonderful time. I love the celebration and the revved up resolve to follow through with things we want to start doing, continue doing, or cease doing in the next twelve months. There are some things in the past year that I would opt to do-over, yet most experiences I wouldn't give back for world. After all, learning flourishes from the mistakes we make.

Here is my latest edition of New Years Resolutions for the year 2011:

1. Have more patience.
2. Read more for the enjoyment of reading.
3. Exercise more, for the betterment of the body as well as the mind.
4. Have more quiet time.
5. Take a chance, a leap of faith.

On a similar (though in some ways opposite...) note, I came across this interesting blog post the other day here. The innately intelligent and witty Erin Loechner not only posts her "goals" for the New Year, but also her "non-goals" as she refers to them. This is a list made up of things she's done well in the past year that she wishes to continue doing throughout the coming new year. I thought the idea was brilliant as it is important give yourself a supportive pat on the back every once in a while for a job well-done.

In following suit, here is my very first edition of New Years "Non-Resolutions" for the year 2011:

1. Staying true to myself, my values, and my beliefs.
2. Discovering and embracing more of a servant's heart.
3. Valuing the importance of family.
4. Flossing at least once a day for the entire 6 months in between dentist visits (a goal I set following my July 2010 dentist appointment and carried all the way through to my most recent December 2010 dentist appointment- benefits were seen in full!)
5. Studying, studying...and more studying- and it payed off!

Happy New Years everyone!
May your 2011 be as blessed (and fashionable) as the departing year.

orange you glad?

Christmas is over and the new year is fast approaching, and a new year always brings with it up and coming fashion trends to indulge in. The Spring 2011 fashion forecast? Orange.
...Or tangerine, marigold, pumpkin...However you choose to slice it, orange is what's in.
As for the above designers, I couldn't have shown it better myself!

...and to all a good night

It seems to be, in my sweet family, that each Christmas manages to out-do the last and without fail the same has proven true again this year. Not only am I truly blessed with a relentless God who brings comfort and joy with each holiday season, I am equally blessed to be part of a family I am forever proud of and who, also, brings endless comfort and joy to my life. And while it is imperative to always bear in mind the real meaning of Christmas, let's be honest...the pile of presents beneath the tree are pretty great as well!

While I am blessed and pleased with each gift I received this Christmas, here are just a few that topped my list:

One of the few reliable men in my life, David Yurman. I sure will love sporting this fabulous two-toned pearl bracelet around town.

Pandora does rings? Who knew!? That's right, everyone's favorite charm bracelet now has a new friend- the Pandora Mother of Pearl Path Ring. Size 6.5, please and thank you. I'll never leave home without it!

Though I'm usually not an electronics kinda gal, the iHome happened to be something I was in desperate need of this Christmas. My alarm clock/radio circa '99 just wasn't cutting it. Saddle up iPod Touch and meet your new best friend!

Merry Christmas to all!

famed photos

Recently I've had the opportunity to rediscover my love for beautiful photography as well as the time to sit and flip through pages of photographs, taking in the beauty and meaning of each one. Here are two recent favorites:

Photographed by Keith Barraclough, there is something so whimsical yet ethereal about this photo. Fur on tulle, what more could a girl desire?

Stepping away from the fashion and haute couture oriented for one moment, I love the dramatic simplicity captured here. Photographed by Jennifer Coudron (proud to call her fam!), this landscape portrait is simply eye catching and curiosity-enducing.

merry and bright

'Tis the season to deck ourselves in sequins, fur and gold accessories all around. Alice + Olivia will be sure to get you noticed in a shimmering, black and gold sequined number. ERRO will keep you toasty warm and make sure to keep your mind off of how cold you actually are, letting you focus on the much more glamourous task of remaining on Santa's "nice" list. MKors will keep a girl classy and punctual to any holiday party. And don't forget to paint the town red (or green!) with fabulous Christmas spirit brought to you by the one and only, Chanel.

musings of marriage

Every girl submits to daydreaming about her future wedding from time to time, and today was just one of those days.

I certainly cannot wait for the Mr. & Mrs. chapter of my life to begin, though I guess this would require a significant other, so maybe I'm getting a bit too ahead of myself...
Ah, but a girl can't dream though can't she?

pretty things: september edition

There's just something so chic and classic about Chanel that brings class to any room. Black and white, marble tiling, and vintage accents= bliss.

La Mer watches in their brand spankin' new Costa Rica collection. ADORE everything about these! I must admit that I'm partial to the turquoise boyfriend style, though I will always have a place in my heart for a wrap watch. (And, of course, I will never turn down anything in pink!)

My obsession for fresh flowers is well-known throughout the [Midwestern] Chic blog, and this picture is no exception. Such beautiful colors make for a beautiful day!

falling forward: luxe, leopard & lace

Fall 2010 is already proving to be an especially fabulous season. Here's a look at three of the most anticipated trends for the upcoming months:

LUXE.
Golden, floor-length, flowing gowns have been spotted all over the runways from designers including Michael Kors, Max Mara, and Gianfranco Ferre.
Not only that, but brocade, such a rich, decorative fabric, seems to be making its fashionable mark this season as well, appearing on the
runways of Balmain, Etro, and Roberto Cavalli.

LEOPARD.
Play up your inner-animal this season by embracing a trend I am FIERCELY excited about- leopard! From jackets and heels to scarves and sunglasses there are so many versatile options for this feline charm. Pictured: Dries Van Noten leopard ensemble from the Fall 2010 collection, Jacket by Balmain ($21,280, at Balmain Boutique in Paris).

LACE.
Spotted on the runways of Antonio Berardi, Dolce & Gabbana, and Haider Ackermann, skin-revealing lace tights and cutouts are proving to be a lasting Fall 2010 trend that give off a vibe that is both sexy and sophisticated

new obsessions

High power, high fashion. Rachel Zoe is undoubtedly one of the most sought after stylists in Hollywood. However, I must confess that I wasn't always a loyal follower of RZ and her fashion kingdom. I guess I just never felt the Zoe-fashion vibe. For whatever reason, though, recently the tables have turned. To date, I am now addicted to the Bravo series The Rachel Zoe Project, an avid reader of The Zoe Report (featured at www.zoereport.com), and a living, walking, breathing advertisement for her brand new accessories line featured at QVC (very chic, and...wait for it...AFFORDABLE!) Obsessed.

I'm always up for trying out new color combos, especially in the summer when the setting just seems so relaxed and much more ideal for taking risks! My new color combo obsession? Black and (what I fondly like to refer to as) canary yellow. No, not just 'yellow'. Not 'gold', either. Canary. Choose your yellow wisely, pair with black, and it's as simple as that. Flawless pop of color in a snap. (Side note: For added glamour, you can never go wrong with Chanel.) Obsessed.

I am definitely a self-proclaimed accessories fanatic, let alone currently addicted to the wrap bracelet, so when I saw Bhati Beads featured on The Today Show a few days ago, I almost died! Made from strips of silk threaded with strands of metallic gold and topped off with five, gold-plated rhinestone charms this wrap bracelet screams Bollywood chic! Available in many colors, countless styles, and for a mere $50, Bhati Beads is sure to complete any summer ensemble with perfection. Obsessed.

For me, when it comes to shoes, I go through phases. Whether it's by season or by mood, I seem to commonly get into a sort of 'rut' when it comes to the shoes that I feel like wearing. Flat, sandal, or heel- whichever it may be, that's what I'll be wearing on my feet for the next few weeks, no diversity. However, there's a new trend that I would be totally willing to jump on the diversity train for- the oxford! If you're as obsessed with MTV show The City as I clearly am, you've definitely noticed Whitney Port and Olivia Palermo rockin' the oxford. What used to be a shoe designed with solely the man in mind, now has a second side to added to its story. With subtle feminine details including ribbon, bows, and lace, as well as an array of colors ranging from pastels to metalics, the oxford is quickly becoming a hot hot hot trend (and closet staple) for women as much as it has been for men. Obsessed.

universal sophistication

Just a few snapshots from the recent Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris.

"The beautiful, magical streets of Paris are sprinkled with fashion's elite—a mix of experts, onlookers, press, society, and fashion lovers. The energy is high, and the fashion world is in full swing, surrounded by an exciting and jovial buzz... "

What I would give to be in the presence of such talented designers as Valentino, Saab, Givenchy, Chanel, Dior...a girl can dream.

Model Alex Curran Gerrard in Haute Hippie's ruffle t-shirt dress. As usual, can't get enough of the subtle feminine details, neutral pallete, and the overall total chicness of such a simple yet fabulous getup! Want. It. Now!

Speaking of Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, the ever fabulous Olivia attended the Elie Saab Fall 2010 show at Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France. Not sure how I'm feeling about the belt though...clashing leopard on leopard? Personally, I think one or the other would have been plenty- but who am I to doubt OPalermo? LOVING the neutral accents of the clutch and shoes, though. Very swank.

summer uniform

...JBrand denim boyfriend shorts, a baggy tee, and a great pair of wedges are just the ticket for an undoubtedly stylish wardrobe! Fun, comfortable, and laid back- perfect for summer. Throw any one of the previously mentioned items on and you're out the door. Easy chic...

...Nude+feathers= perfectly on point. Nudes and neutrals have been a strong theme lately and feathers add a touch of wild that every fabulous woman needs in her closet! A great way to incorporate this trend is with a fabulous dress like the one shown above from Prabal Gurung's Fall 2010 collection...

...It's no secret that I'm a HUGE fan of the Roberta Freymann bib necklace and it has become a growing trend seen on both the runways and the streets in full fashion force. I lovingly refer to them as my "off-season scarves " as they are a great way to take your plain tee/dress ensemble from drab to fab, adding an instant pop of color and sparkle, but without making you break a sweat in the warm weather months! Tons of color combos are available, sure to please all...

...Sunnies (and puppys) are a must for any season, but especially summer! The great thing about sunglasses is that there is such a diverse selection available just about anywhere you go which makes it the easiest thing to find the perfect (both fittingly and fashion-wise) pair. You can never have too many, my friends...

haute like wow

Needless to say, I want this to be a feature room in wherever it may be that I am living in 5 years. There's something about french doors, a statement piece chandelier, and a touch of pink that presents class at its finest.

LOVING THIS LOOK!!! (Olivia Palermo at the Civic Leadership Spring Benefit at DVF Studios.) Very OP, and the subtle neutral tones with a touch of sparkle couldn't me more feminine or more DVF. Obsessed, as usual.

You know what they say, "Once you go Oscar you never go back." ...de la Renta that is ;) Always outdoing himself, the Resort 2011 Collection is no exception to his fabulous (and more than well deserved) reputation.

I've been channeling the messy side braid lately and APatridge has absolutely provided endless inspiration. Fabulous. So hippie chic.

dazed luxury

A familiar face seems to have landed a new gig with Models1. The Models1 blog recently said this about Miss Palermo, "We have loved Olivia for a long time here at Models1, but after meeting her at the Mulberry event last fashion week (with her lovely boyfriend, Models1's very own Johannes), we fell head over heels for the New York beauty! A meeting later we are THRILLED to announce that Olivia has now joined our Special Bookings division." Of course this comes as no surprise to anyone familiar with Olivia, I'm only slightly shocked this hadn't happened any sooner! (Side note: I adore this pic of OP as it is one of the few I've seen that portrays any sense of normalcy and genuine happiness about her. Cheer up girlfriend!)

Loving the strong shouldered MM Couture mini from [redacted] boutique, but more importantly I am OBSESSED with the ivory/tan wide belt! I have been lusting over these for weeks now as they seem to compliment any dress or baggy top nicely. Lucky for me this one is priced quite reasonably at only $17.50!
[Pictures via Swankboutiqueonline.com]

Something I've truly enjoyed lately: a fabulous read. Something I've been dreaming about lately: an apartment/home of my own...and how I would embellish such a place! A bookshelf like this one (complete with everything you see on it, of course) would absolutely be in order. A touch of refined intelligence and class, indeed.

Marc Jacobs Resort Collection 2010. Fabulous day-to-night combos with that effortless Marc style. What more could a girl want?

the return of fabulousness

To begin, I must appologize for my absence. After a long and grueling battle with a computer virus I did what every girl fears- I invited the Geek Squad from my local [redacted] into my home to take a look. After a few days of doubt and blog-withdrawal, I'm back feeling rejuvenated and ready for some cocktails, celebs, couture! xo

As usual, LOVING OPalermo's getup. The epitome of classy and fabulous, even loving the fringe trend. And you know I'm going crazy over the Roberta Freyman necklace- so chic! OP's obsession with TopShop has me lusting over several pieces from the website and it's only a matter of time before I give in to my inner wanna-be-Olivia!

LOVE it.

These six ladies (seven including Sonja- not pictured) have kept me pleasantly entertained on the current season of The Real Housewives of New York City. To recap- Kelly is certifiably on crack insane out of her mind, Luann continues to maintain her cougar reputation (and her OTHER reputation for dating creepy men who need to just come out of the closet flaming, let's be honest), Jill...sadly just needs to get over herself and the mistakes she's made (but gotta love Bobby), Bethenny (my new fav) is pregnant, fabulous and still managing to rattle off the best one-liners I've ever heard, Ramona is 100% still "The Ramonacoaster", and Alex has seemingly grown some major backbone since last season! Sonja, the new housewife, is a daily dose of SATC's Samantha which is simply pure entertainment. Could not survive without these women- they're my off-season OC Housewives.

Absolutely must purchase this in the near future. (Additionally, LC's newest book will mark the beginning of my "Must Read" book list for this summer. LOVE!)

Vogue's Top 10 Summer Sizzle List for 2010:

1. A tiny white bikini, for poolside iced-espresso sipping.
2. A high-waisted Hollywood-goddess swimsuit for frolicking scenically in the surf.
3. A slim-cut, mannish jacket to wear over numbers 1 and 2 as an unconventional cover-up.
4. A zebra-striped bad, big enough for a bottle of SPF 30 Creme de la Mer and several ebay-ed copies of Fleur Cowles's Flair.
5. A chunky white wristwatch.
6. A wide-brimmed hat. Those passe porkpies never were much use in the sun.
7. A white minidress, possibly sliced or cut here or there. Yes, white is everywhere.
8. A blouse with an I Love Lucy print. Leopard spots? Polka dots?
9. Bangles that look like they came from a market in Zanzibar, to wear on both arms.
10. A perfectly weightless pastel chiffon dress, for wafting down lower Fifth Avenue, pretending it's 1938 and we're inspiring Irwin Shaw to pen "The Girls in Their Summer Dresses".

It's good to be back.
